No one walks alone and when one is walking
on the journey of life just where do you start to thank those that
joined you, walked beside you, and helped you along the way.
Over the years, those that I have met and worked
with have continuously urged me to write a book, to put my thoughts
down on paper, and to share my insights together with the secrets
to my continual, positive approach to life and all that life throws
at us. So at last, here it is.
So, perhaps this book and it's pages will be seen
as "thanks" to the tens of thousands of you who have helped
make my life what is today.
Much of what I have learned over the years came as
the result of being a father to 3 wonderful and delightful children,
Annette, Ian,
and Claire all of whom, in their own
ways inspired me and, subconsciously contributed a tremendous amount
to the content of this book. A little bit of each of them will be
found here weaving in and out of the pages - thanks kids!!
I also have to thank Jim Rohn,
with whom I have had the pleasure of sharing a stage and working
with and whose words, over the years has taught me much about my
self and the mysterious ways of life.
I also need to thank a wonderful man who changed me
completely, and that was Mark Hughes
- he taught me humility and how to value the lives, thoughts and
expressions of others, how to care for and understand their needs.
Sadly he passed on so my thanks go to his family and all those around
the world who loved him as much as I did.
I also need to thank Toastmasters
International, an amazing organization to whom I now dedicate
much of my life. It is through their teachings, encouragement and
support that I have gained and grown. Through this book and my travels
I will continue to spread their message of support to others wishing
to develop as human beings.
It's strange to think that I have been working non-stop
for 34 years and that this is my first book. The catalyst that made
me complete this work was CAPS - the Canadian
Association of Professional Speakers. This amazing organization
is comprised of individuals with amazing talent all of whom are
dedicated to sharing their knowledge with others so that they too
might go onto become successful in their lives. They shared their
knowledge, their ideas, and numerous tips all of which culminated
in the completion of this book. Thanks guys. They helped me. They
might also help you. Visit them at www.canadianspeakers.org
And then comes Carol Clarke,
my editor and critic with an abundance of talent and patience. She
read my drafts, understood my message, and helped me to say what
I wanted to say, that is, once she understood my British "quirkyisms"
- she will hate that word because it doesn't exist, but it does
get my message over and she is not editing this part of the book!
This next little paragraph is just for you Carol:
- The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks
than the British or Americans.
- The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks
than the British or Americans.
- The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart
attacks than the British or Americans.
- The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer
fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
- The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and
fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you
like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. Which explains
why Carol kept changing my British spelling. If you are contemplating
writing a book might I suggest you contact Carol - she is the best.
And lastly to my dear wife Shirley
who has had to live with my DOGASH attitude as I wrote these chapters.
She has stood by me and had to listen to me as I read and re-read
each and every chapter. She has spent as many hours sitting by her
keyboard, typing out my words as I have spent writing them. She
has been the inspiration that has driven me onwards. She has kept
me focused. She let me be quiet when I wanted to be quiet, and when
I wanted to be noisy - well, that is another story. Thank you my
Darling. You can rest for a couple of weeks now. By the way, she
is an amazing web site designer - you can look at her work by visiting
www.websitecaretaker.com
I have poured my heart and soul into these pages,
so now I pray that my words touch your heart soul and mind.
